I welcomed my second child into the world almost four months ago (wow the time has flown by!), and we have officially passed the newborn phase! I love newborns. They smell divine, they are the sweetest thing in the entire world, and they are just bundles of the most amazing love. There is nothing in the world as wonderful as a newborn.
…but, newborns are also a lot of work. Somehow it never seems like some one so small can occupy so much of your time, but they do! Between feedings, diaper changes, and trying to get in a few hours of sleep, it can seem like 3 full time jobs!
Being prepared for those first few months of having a newborn is a great way to make the process a little easier, so I have put together a list of 7 must haves for new moms.
1. Milk (or formula)
The first thing babies need is to eat! And eat they do! My little guy is a grazer, and would eat every hour. He has since, blessedly, spaced it out to every 3 hours, but I digress.
I am a huge advocate for breastfeeding. Breast is best. If you can breastfeed, you should definitely try it. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6 months of your babies life, but you can certainly go longer if you’re able and willing. I nursed my firstborn for 15 months, and plan on nursing my son for 2 years, if he wants to. Breastfeeding is great for baby and great for mom. You can read all about the wonderful benefits of breastfeeding here.
But, I personally know many wonderful moms who weren’t able to breastfeed, and that’s okay. Formula feeding moms are great moms. I imagine formula feeding can get expensive, really quick! So if you are formula feeding, a great tip is to buy formula from Sam’s Club®, where you can get great deals and save money.
Oh, there will be diapers. Many, many diapers. I am sort of a stock-piler, and I also try to look for the best deal there is, and I always found the best deals when buying in bulk from Sam’s Club®. They have some great deals on Huggies diapers, so it is a great place to stock up!
Just as important as diapers are wipes! And just like you can save big when you buy in bulk from Sam’s Club®. If your little one has sensitive skin, make sure to look for a brand that is free from fragrance and alcohol.
One of my favorite things of having a baby is dressing them in soft and sweet onesies. I can’t explain why, but I just absolutely love it. But, it is another thing that can get expensive! I love picking up Carter’s Two-Piece Bodysuit and Pant sets from Sam’s Club®, because they’re affordable, and so sweet. I have 7 or 8 of these in my son’s closet (my “Wild About Mommy” set is my fav).
5. Diaper Genie
When I was pregnant with my first baby, I was on the fence about a diaper genie. I thought it may be an unnecessary expense, but decided to go ahead and register for it, and ooh, and I glad I did! Diapers are really stinky, and I am a big fan of not having my babe’s room smell bad, and diaper genies do a remarkable job of eliminating the odor.
6. Shampoo, Baby Wash & Lotion
One of my favorite things to do with both of my newborns was bathing them. Babies seem to either love or hate baths, but luckily, both of my babies loved bath time. I used Aveeno Baby Lotion and Shampoo & Wash.
7. A Car Seat
Even if you’re not a big traveler, or prefer being on foot, you will need a car seat to get home from the hospital. You can check out reviews on www.samsclub.com to see what brands other parents love best!
