Apple Donuts 4

Apple Donuts with Warm Maple and Crumbled Bacon

I remember taking my first Home Economics course in junior high, and learning how to bake.  It opened up a whole new world for me! It enabled me to create delicious treats at home, transforming the most basic ingredients into works of delicious art.

When I became a mother, I knew I wanted to expose my children to cooking at an early age, and hopefully instill in them that same sense of fun wonder and satisfaction.  Over the past four and a half years since my daughter was born, cooking has become one of our favorite activities to do together.  She helps me collect ingredients, read recipes, measure and mix, and I get tremendous joy watching her excitement as we create nourishing food together!

The one thing that she is not a huge fan of is waiting.  Having to wait 30+ minutes for cupcakes or other baked goods is pushing her limits, as she is definitely into instant gratification (like most 4-year-olds).

That is why I love Holstein Houseware’s small appliances.  Holstein Housewares satisfies the need for small, functional kitchen appliances that are family-friendly and fun!  They specialize in novelty, high quality electronics that help even the novice chef create delicious and healthy meals for casual entertaining.  With the help of Holstein Houseware’s appliances, you can create Pinterest-worthy treats for your friends and family!

Last month, we created chocolate waffles from scratch, and this week we decided to try out their fun doughnut maker!  Both appliances create fun foods that my daughter loves, and they take around 7 minutes to cook, so little miss instant gratification doesn’t lose interest before our masterpiece is done!  They also come in vibrant colors and save the energy of having to heat up the oven (or my house, during the summer!).

I decided to invent a recipe, with Elle’s help, that would be a great breakfast or snack.  I also wanted to use all natural ingredients, and make it sugar free, to make it healthier. They turned out great!  I incorporated the use of molasses, which gave the donuts a rich, old-fashioned flavor, and the topping of warm maple syrup and crumbled bacon gave it a harmonious balance of savory and sweet.

These are perfect for spring time! The weather is warming up, the grass and trees are turning green, and new life is out in full-force!  Whip up a batch of these delicious donuts, and bring them outside for a breakfast, or take them to the park for a fun spring outing!

(Makes 24 mini donuts)

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1/8 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup unbleached flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 3 – 4 pieces of bacon, cooked and crumbled

Warm donut maker, and spray with olive oil non-stick spray.

Combine eggs, molasses, applesauce, coconut oil and vanilla extract in a bowl.  Whisk until well mixed.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.  Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Pour batter into donut maker, and allow to cook 5 – 7 minutes, or according to appliance directions.  Continue making donuts until all batter is used.

In a small pan over medium heat, warm maple syrup.  Pour warm maple syrup over cooked donuts, and top with crumbled bacon.
