The other day, I shared on my Facebook that my daughter and I were talking about dinner. I mentioned that I wanted to make pizza, in which she responded, “I know what kind of pizza you can make. Broccoli pizza!”. I’m not one to turn down a great idea, so with the help of a few great suggestions from my facebook readers, I set out to make the perfect broccoli pizza!
I have had a long history with pizza. As a child, I remember loving the Friday nights when we ordered pizza delivery. In college, I actually delivered pizzas for a restaurant for 2 years, and when I wasn’t eating delivery pizza, I was a huge fan of the frozen cheap-o pizzas you could get for under a dollar.
About 3 years ago, I discovered how easy (and tasty) it was to make my own pizza crust, and eventually graduated into making my own pizza sauces as well. Depending on how much time and energy, you can make this completely homemade, or semi-homemade. Either way, it’s sure to be tasty.
Broccoli, Feta & Alfredo Pizza
For the crust:
- .25 ounces active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 2.5 cups flour
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
Combine active dry yeast and water, stir well, and let stand for 10 minutes. In a larger bowl, add flour, and pour in yeast/water mixture. Add in olive oil and salt, and mix well until a dough has formed. Cover bowl with a clean towel, and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
For the sauce:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1.5 cups grated Parmesan cheese
In a medium sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic cloves, and cook for 30 second. Stir in heavy cream, bring almost to a boil, then slowly add in cheese, stirring well after each addition, until completely melted and incorporated. Remove from heat.
The toppings and bringing it all together:
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- 2 cups feta cheese
Roll out the pizza crust onto a well-greased pizza stone or cookie sheet. Meanwhile, add 1″ of water to a medium sauce pan, and add in broccoli florets. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat. Steam for 8 minutes, or until soft.
Top pizza dough with alfredo sauce, steamed broccoli, and then sprinkle on feta cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until crust is cooked through, and cheese is starting to brown.
