It has been about a year since I tried my first lip scrub, and I have to admit, I love it. It helps exfoliate and soften the lips and skin around the lips. It also helps remove dead, dry skin which can be irritating and unsightly.
Homemade lip scrubs can help get rid of the tiny blackheads in that area, that I never seem to notice, unless I get up close and personal with my mirror. I created this DIY brown sugar lip scrub with only 3 natural ingredients, which cost less than $1, and should last you at least a month.
If you happen to get this brown sugar lip scrub too close to your mouth, no worries… it’s safe enough to eat!
DIY Brown Sugar Lip Scrub
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- a clean container with a lid
Combine coconut oil, honey and brown sugar in a small bowl, and mix to combine. Store in a clean, sealed container for up to 1 month.
Use a clean spoon or other utensil to remove 1 tsp of the homemade lip scrub. Gently massage into and around lips for 30 – 60 seconds. Rinse clean with water, and apply homemade lip butter or chapstick.
This is an easy recipe to modify! Do you want more, or less? To break it down, it is 1 part oil, 1 part honey and 2 parts sugar. You could really sub in any oil or any sugar you want, but be careful using large grain sugar, as it could potentially irritate the delicate facial skin, if you scrub too aggressively.
I personally use this sugar lip scrub, and all body scrubs no more than once a week. This article explains how overusing sugar or salt scrubs can be damaging to your skin, so it is adviseable to use natural scrubs, gently applying them, no more than every 7 – 10 days.
If you don’t want to make your own DIY Brown Sugar Lip Scrub, you can find the lip scrub on Amazon… but it’ll cost you a pretty penny.
I personally recommend you try it at home and save yourself some money, and while you’re at it, try one of these simple exfoliating face scrubs using ingredients that are already in your kitchen!
