When I became a parent for the first time, I learned just how sensitive newborns skin can be. When my daughter was only a month old, she started having every skin rash and sensitivity that I had ever heard of, and some I hadn’t! She got baby acne, heat rashes, contact dermatitis, eczema, allergic reactions… I felt so bad because she had beautiful newborn skin, but it was so sensitive that she was always having some type of skin problem.
That was when I decided to take a serious look at the products I used in my home. What lotions I put on her (and me, since I was carrying her), perfumes, home cleaners, and laundry detergents. After doing a little research, I learned that perfumes and dyes in many of these products could be irritating to delicate skin, and I decided to make a change. I started buying lotions, soaps and shampoos that were free of dyes and perfumes, I started making my own household cleaners, and I made sure that the laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets I bought were free of dyes and perfumes.
It may not seem like it, but the laundry items we use can have a big impact on our skin. Think about it… we have our clothes touching our skin all day long. At night, we lay down in laundered sheets for 8+ hours a night. Our skin is in almost constant contact with fabric of some sort, and it makes sense that people with sensitive skin would have reactions to that fabric, if it isn’t washed with laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets that are free from dyes and perfumes.
Since the time my now 4-year-old daughter was around 2 months old, I have been using laundry products that are free and gentle. Because even though she is the only one in our family with particularly sensitive skin, I know my husband, myself, and now my 2 month old baby boy will benefit from having clothes, sheets and towels that are more gentle on the skin. Our skin is, after all, the largest organ our body has!
I got to try out the new Free & Gentle collection that includes Tide Free & Gentle Detergent Pods, Downy Free & Gentle Fabric Conditioner, and Bounce Free & Gentle Dryer Sheets. All three are completely dye free, perfume free and hypoallergenic, and they are dermatologist recommended.
Tide Free & Gentle Detergent
Tide Free & Gentle Detergent makes these super handy Pods which makes washing clothes a breeze. I have a front-loading washer and dryer, and all I had to do is grab a pod and throw it in with the clothes, and turn my washing machine on. No measuring, pouring or cleaning up spilled messes (which is awesome), and it did a great job laundering my family’s clothes!
With a newborn in the house, I am laundering some fairly dirty clothes these days, and Tide Free & Gentle Pods gets our clothes squeaky clean. It is mild on the skin and removes residue from stains.
Tide also makes a Stain Release Free In-Wash Booster, for clothes that are particularly tough to get clean!
Downy Free & Gentle Fabric Softener
I don’t generally use fabric softener in our weekly laundry routine, but I have to say, after adding it to our laundry this past week, I appreciate the added comfort and gentle softness that Downy Free & Gentle provides.
Downy Free & Gentle is dermatologist tested, free of dyes and perfumes, and is mild on the skin.
Bounce Free & Gentle Dryer Sheets
Dryer sheets are a must in our house! I have actually spent at least 10 minutes at my local store, trying to find dryer sheets that don’t have perfumes in them, and was so excited when my store finally stocked Bounce Free & Gentle Dryer Sheets. The truth is, I have to have dryer sheets. The static that gets into our clothes without dryer sheets is unreal, and I end up shocking myself (or my kids) when we don’t use it.
I have used Bounce Free & Gentle for the past year, and it does an exceptional job of softening our clothes, reducing static and making our sheets feel fresh. I also love that I am eliminating dyes and perfumes on my baby’s clothes, swing and bouncer.
Do you or someone in your family have sensitive skin? Have you made the switch to a Free & Gentle laundry routine?
