Home Made Sausage Rolls

I recently heard of the UK dish called home made sausage rolls.  There are many different ways to prepare home made sausage rolls, but the basic concept is to wrap a breadcrumb and sausage mixture in puff pastry and brush it with a milk/egg mixture, and bake to a golden perfection!  It’s salty, slightly spicy, crunchy and light. And, full disclaimer, incredibly addicting!

Since it’s just about Super Bowl, I figured this would be a great time to test out this yummy home made sausage rolls recipe! 

Home Made Sausage Rolls


  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground sage
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 pound uncooked ground sausage
  • 3 sheets puffed pastry (here is a homemade version
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  

In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat and saute onions until translucent, about 8-10 minutes.  Transfer to a medium bowl.  

To the onions, add breadcrumbs, sage and sausage and mix together.  Spoon mix into a large plastic baggie and squeeze into a corner of the bag.  Create a small cut on the edge to pipe the mix onto the puff pastry. 

Whisk together egg and milk in a small bowl.  Set aside. 

Roll out puff pastry into a large rectangle, about 1/8″ thick, and cut into four even pieces.  Squeeze a long line of mixture down the edge of the pastry, about 1/2″ from the edge. Roll up the puff pastry, so the sausage filling is in the center.  Brush the end with the egg/milk mixture and seal.

Cut each roll in thirds.  Using a fork, prick each roll, several times, with a fork.  Brush the tops of each roll with the egg/milk mixture. Repeat with other two sheets of puff pastry. 

Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes.  Serve with homemade bbq sauce or homemade sriracha dipping sauce.
