Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I think the first time I ever remember making a homemade chocolate chip cookie recipe from scratch was in Home Ec, in 7th grade. In my little mini kitchen, at the mature age of 12, I was delighted to learn I could take simple ingredients, like flour, sugar and baking soda, and turn it into such a delightful creation. I went home and asked my mom to buy me baking supplies so I could recreate all of the recipes I learned in that class, including Pineapple Upsidedown Cake (mmm… I need to make that soon).

Since I now have the love for cooking and occasionally baking, I want to teach Elle how to make her own food, and share this passion with her. She is admittedly more interested in baking at this point, than cooking savory dishes, but I can tell she is going to be a natural. She holds out measuring cups, pours in ingredients, and occasionally smashes eggs (when I’m in a cleaning mood). We have so much fun creating desserts together, and I cherish those times with her.

It recently occurred to me that I have never made a simple, homemade chocolate chip cookie recipe with her. I used to make them a lot for my husband, but must have forgotten about this classic, somewhere along the way. I figured it was mighty time to correct that blunder, and whip up a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies with Elle, stat!

Just a quick warning, these are not healthy for the body, but they sure are a treat for the spirit 🙂 And they are, after all, homemade.

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup organic sugar cane
  • 1 cup organic brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups unbleached flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups dark chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and both sugars, until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Add in vanilla extract and stir.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Slowly pour flour mixture into butter mixture, 1 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. Once flour and butter mixture are fully incorporated, fold in chocolate chips. Drop tablespoon sized dough onto an ungreased cookie pan, and bake in preheated oven for 8-10 minutes.

    My son loves them anyway!

3 teaspoons vanilla ? (usually recipes call for 1…)….also vanilla was not included in the instructions… My cookies didnt come out looking as great as they do in photo…perhaps if I had used dark brown sugar they would look and taste better….

I really like the flavor of vanilla, but yes, it is more than other recipes. If your family has other tastes, please modify to suit your needs! I find that the temperature of the dough when I put it into the oven makes a big difference in the final appearance… as does the age of my baking soda, and how “soft” my butter gets.

  3. I love how you used dark chocolate chips! This is still my favorite cookie in the world! Especially when it comes out of the oven warm and melty!
