Last year, I learned how to make lip balm using coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter. It became an instant classic in my home, and the homes of my friends and family. I have probably made over 100 tubes at this point, because my house randomly eats them. I think if I ever move, I am going to find 50 half-empty tubes of homemade lip balm in various places.
Although I absolutely love my homemade lip balm, sometimes a girl just needs a good homemade lip gloss recipe, to put on for ladies night out, or just because. This homemade lip gloss recipe is lighter and silkier than lip balm, and leaves your lips feeling wonderfully soft and smooth.
Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe
- 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles
- 2 tbsp jojoba oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 5 drops essential oils (optional)
Add beeswax and all oils to a mason jar or small glass bowl, and place inside of a pot filled with with 2 inches of water. Heat over medium-high until beeswax and oils are melted together, stirring occasionally. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in essential oils, if using.
Spoon into containers (I used these reusable ones) and allow to cool before adding lid.
Good essential oils to use in this recipe are lemon, grapefruit, orange, eucalyptus, or peppermint. My personal favorite is peppermint.
The ingredients it takes to make this lip balm cost:
- Beeswax: $.77
- Jojoba oil: $2.60
- Coconut oil: $.99
- Olive Oil: $.07
- peppermint Essential oil: $.12
For a whopping grand total of $4.48. If you take the cost of 18 containers (which is how many this recipe makes) at $.30 a piece, then you can make 18 homemade lip glosses for $9.88, or $.55 a piece. That sure beats paying $5+ a piece at retail!
You can also add 1/8 tsp beet root powder to color the lip gloss for a pink, beautiful shine. Just add the beet root powder at the same time as the essential oils.
