My daughter is almost done with her kindergarten year, and I now have almost a full school year of packing breakfast and lunches under my metaphorical belt! I have enjoyed coming up with delicious meals for her to enjoy at school, and have learned a few tricks along the way. Today, I wanted to share my top 3 favorite kid’s lunch box hacks!
How to Keep Fruit From Turning Brown
Providing balanced meals for my daughter is a big priority of mine, so I like to include fresh fruit in her packed breakfasts and lunches. I find buying whole fruit saves money, but it can be challenging to keep the fruit (such as apples and pears) from turning brown after they’re cut into bite-size pieces. There are a few methods on how to keep fruit from turning brown.
- Lemon Juice – Pour a teaspoon or so of fresh or bottled lemon juice over the cut up fruit, and toss to coat. Store in an air-tight container until ready to use.
- Water – Submerging fruit in water keeps them from turning brown. You can add cut up fresh fruit to a baggie or a reusable container, and seal.
Pair Fruit and Veggies with Dips
My daughter is a picky eater, to put it lightly. It is hard to convince her to eat fruit and veggies. Once I started pairing her fresh fruit and veggies with dips, she started eating them! Here are some dip ideas to pair with fresh fruit and veggies.
- Peanut Butter: Goes with sliced apples, sliced bananas, and celery
- Yogurt: Goes with fresh berries, pears, and grapes
- Hummus: Goes with cut up carrots, celery, cauliflower and bell peppers
Pack Organic Single-Serving Drinks
A few months ago, while I was grocery shopping, I found Capri Sun Organic juice drinks, and was thrilled to find another organic juice drink option to pack in my daughter’s lunch. I am an avid label reader, so I was thrilled to see that Capri Sun Organic contained no added sugar, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
My daughter loves Capri Sun Organic apple and grape drinks. Each pouch provides 1/2 cup fruit juice, which is the equivalent of one serving of fruit (according to U.S. Dietary Guidelines). I also feel good knowing that Capri Sun Organic juice drink is certified USDA Organic.
You can pick up a 10 pack of Capri Sun Organic juice drink for $4.29.
