Hey there! This post contains affiliate links, which shouldn’t come as a surprise seeing as it is a post about how I make money blogging! Every affiliate link is to a product I currently use and love. If you’re interested in any service or product, please check them out 🙂
Let’s get straight to it!
May Blog Income
Why I Started Blogging
I started my blog because I really love taking pictures of food and to be honest, I never anticipated making money from it. However, I have been fortunate to connect with other bloggers over the years though, and with their advice, I have turned my hobby into a way to help support my family. This has been especially helpful, since I got divorced last year, and my household income essentially got cut in half! I do have a regular 8-5 job, so I blog part time, in the evenings and weekends, after my grad school work is done and my kids are in bed. I would say I spend 20 – 25 hours a week on my blog, so it’s quite a commitment, but I enjoy it.
Income – What I Earned
In May, I earned $1,929. Here is how I earned it:
- Ad Revenue: $637.82 (I use The Blogger Network)*
- Sponsored Posts: $1,075.00
- Social Share Ads: $160.00
- Amazon Affiliate Sales: $56.32
*I want to make a quick note… I updated my theme a couple days ago, which COMPLETELY wiped out my sidebar. All my ads were gone! It was 10:30 at night when I figured it out, and I texted the support team at The Blogger Network, hoping they would be able to help me the following morning. Within 10 minutes, I received a response from a team member, telling me they were working on it, and by 12:30 am, they had all the ads back up and running.
Can I just say I was so impressed? A tech team that works overnight? They’re based out of Utah, so they’re in the same time zone as me. So, if you’re looking at finding a new ad network, I can’t say enough good things about The Blogger Network!
Another quick note… I have been thinking a lot about affiliate sales lately. I don’t do them heavily, because I only want to recommend products that I would personally use and feel are safe, so that cuts out a lot of options for me! That being said, I have signed up with two new companies that I am obsessed with. The first is Life Abundance, which makes a line of healthy living supplements that are all non-GMO and natural. I love them and am excited to help others who are looking for an easy way to give their body a little more nutritional support.
I also found this amazing woman, named Grace, who records hypnosis sessions that I have been using since I separated from my ex-husband. It helped me tremendously with some stress and anxiety issues I was having, and I want to get the word out about how amazing and life-changing she is.
I love that these two products are something I have personally used, continually benefit from, and believe in! I am also excited about the prospect of making a little money from helping others, and also helping others who become passionate about these products earn money as well.
Expenses – What I Spent
Of course, I have some expenses associated with blogging. In April, I spent $242:
- Virtual Assistant: $50.00
- MadMimi Email: $45.00 (to send emails)
- Jaaxy: $19.00 (Keyword research)
- Autopin.co: $39.00 (to grow Pinterest subscribers)
- Tailwind: $10.00 (to schedule Pins)
- Facebook Ads: $50.00
- HostGator: $9.95
- Coschedule: $10.00 (editorial calendar)
- Archie: $9.00 (Twitter and Instagram follows)
Of course, there were costs associated with food and supplies, as well.
The finance person in me was curious to see what that amounted to an hour. Last month, my hourly wage was $11.89 an hour. This month I took my income ($1,929) less my expenses ($242), divided by the approximate number of hours I worked (65), and it came out to about $26 an hour. That is pretty awesome for something I enjoy doing so much!
How Many Visitors I Had
Of course, no one will pay you to blog, if you don’t have visitors! My pageviews are down about 15k this month, which I have honestly been expecting. I haven’t had the time to share old posts as frequently, and haven’t been writing as many new posts since I moved a couple months ago.
Checking this is motivating though, and makes me want to focus a little more on creating content that can help others. Because, after all, that is what I enjoy most about blogging.
If you find this helpful or interesting, please let me know in the comments. I hope to continue growing my revenue while doing something I love, and providing helpful and free tutorials to every wonderful friend who visits my blog! Check back at the beginning of July to see what June brings!
