Meditation for kids

My 5-year-old daughter is brilliant, creative, and kind to everyone she meets.  I am so proud of her attributes!  There are moments, though, where she loses her cool.  And when I say that, I don’t mean she has a mini-meltdown, I mean a full-blown, toddler tantrum that usually happens in public, and leaves me completely mortified. 

I have been looking for some tools to give to my daughter, to handle her strong emotions in a more constructive way.  I have personally benefited tremendously from meditation, so I started exposing her to meditation techniques.  

Meditation Tips for Kids

Step 1: Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position

Have your child sit in a comfortable cross-legged (or criss cross applesauce) position, with their hands resting palms-up on their knees.  

Step 2: Ask your child to pay attention to their breath

Ask your child to notice how their chest rises and falls with each breath. By focusing on their breath, it can help children to focus on an individual moment, instead of other worries or concerns.

Step 3: Describe a safe and beautiful place

Ask your child to close their eyes, and then describe a safe and beautiful place that feels serene to you.  Describe your paradise. What do you see?  What do you hear? What scents and textures are you experiencing?  Guide your child through your serene place by describing

Step 4: Be Patient and flexible

I took my daughter to a meditation class for kids, and watched as 10 children meditated.  Kids are fidgety, lose focus, don’t sit like they’re told, don’t keep their hands still, and can be all over the place.  That’s okay!  Be patient and flexible, and if it isn’t working, try again later. 

Step 5: Create a wishing love wand:

wishing love wandA wishing love wand is a wand that children can use to wish love and kindness towards other people.  They are simple to make out of a straw, tape and a piece of paper cut into a star (and decorated if your child wants to!).  My daughter has been so enthusiastic sending love with her wishing love wand, and it warms my hear to hear her wanting to send love to everyone around her!

  1. These are such wonderful tips for calming a child, but they would be great for anyone. I use this same detergent for the same reasons you mentioned, too. For the members of my family with sensitive skin issues, ALL has been a life saver!

    Dealing with tantrums is all about teaching acceptable outlets for the emotion. Meditation is a wonderful way to channel emotions into acceptable behaviors. My mother tells me I had terrible reactions to laundry detergent as an infant. Back int he day. there were not many alternatives. It’s wonderful that there are better alternatives for us and our children these days.
