sweet and savory jalapeno poppers

Sweet and Spicy Jalapeno Poppers

I think we have all heard of and tried jalapeno poppers. And chances are, if you’re reading this entry, you probably love them too!

I have been making and eating jalapeno poppers for probably 15 years now.  They are such a delightful snack, they’re easy to make, and they are a true crowd pleaser.

I have made a lot of Mexican food on my blog, but I haven’t shared jalapeno poppers, because most of the recipes are basically the same… and there are thousands of similar recipes in the blogosphere. However, I recently started making them with a twist: sweet and spicy jalapeno poppers.

What makes them sweet?  A little bit of citrus juice whipped into the cream cheese, and a sprinkle of brown sugar on top of the bacon, that caramelizes and crisps up, in what is sure to elevate this favorite to the next level.

As an added bonus, if you like spice, but in moderate amounts, the added sweetness seems to neutralize a bit of the spice, making it easier to eat for sensitive palates.

Sweet and Spicy Jalapeno Poppers

  • 16 whole (and fresh) jalapenos
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • Juice from one orange
  • 1 package of bacon (16 pieces)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Remove the tops off the jalapenos, and cut the jalapenos in half, lengthwise.  Remove membranes and seeds.

In a small bowl, combine cream cheese and the juice from one orange, until well mixed.  Use a spoon and fill each jalapeno half with some of the cream cheese mixture, until all the cream cheese is gone, and all the jalapenos are stuffed.

Cut the bacon strips in half, so you have 32 pieces.  Wrap each jalapeno half with a strip of bacon, and secure it with a toothpick.  Place jalapeno poppers on a baking sheet, and sprinkle a 1/2 tsp of brown sugar on top of each popper.

Bake in preheated oven for 20 – 25 minutes, until crispy.  If you want it extra crispy, you can turn the oven up to broil for the last 30 – 60 seconds of cooking (just keep a close eye on it).
