Tips for Staying Healthy

I am a working single mom, and balancing the demands of home and work can be a struggle! There isn’t much time leftover at the end of the day to focus on exercise, when you’ve put in a 14 hour day between work and the kids!

Living a healthy lifestyle is important to me though, as it provides my body with the fuel and energy to sustain my demanding schedule, while keeping me feeling great.  To help me fulfill my goal of living a balanced lifestyle, I sneak in bits of exercise, and keep healthy snacks at work, so I can be proactive throughout my work day.

I compiled a list of tips for staying healthy at work, so you can spread healthy living throughout your day, too! By taking these small steps on a daily basis, you can incorporate significant and positive change in your life and take control of your health!

Tips for Staying Healthy at Work

Water, Water, Water

Giving your body an adequate amount of water is crucial! Aim for 8 – 10 glasses of water, everyday, to keep your body hydrated.  I personally bring a 32-oz cup of ice water to work, and aim at drinking and refilling it every 2 hours.  That way, I know I am getting in my daily dose of water.

Stockpile Healthy Snacks

Steer clear of that vending machine by keeping healthy snacks in your desk drawer.  Every morning, I grab an apple and an orange, and any cut up veggies I have in my fridge.  I will often pair fresh fruit with peanut butter and veggies with hummus, to add healthy fat to my snacks, and keep me full until lunch time.

Get up and Move

If you have a desk job, get up and walk around every 30 minutes. Go make a copy of some paperwork. If there are stairs in your office area, walk up and down the stairs a few time.  Go deliver a message in person instead of sending an email.  Move your body and stretch your legs every 30 minutes.

Optimize Your Lunch Break

If you can’t make it home on your lunch break, take advantage of that down time!  Go outside and take a walk!  Use as much of your lunch break to get in a little exercise!

Pack Your Lunch

Eating out costs a lot of money, and is usually not healthy.  Pack a nutritious lunch from home and bring it to work to enjoy!

These are great tips. I actually have a timer set on my phone to remind me to get up and move every 30 minutes because otherwise 2 hours flies by before I’ve realized how long I’ve been sitting!

Great tips. Thanks for reminding me to go drink some water right now!! I stumbled, tweeted, and google+.

It’s so important for moms to take care of themselves so that we can take care of our families. I’m a big proponent of drinking more water, especially when you’re ill (just ask my kids because I preach “more water” to them all the time).
