That’s right. Ginger, Coconut oil and sugar… all combined to create one deliciously fragrant and homemade body scrub. Ginger is one of my favorite ingredients. First and most importantly, it’s delicious. It is also an incredible healing root, known particularly for its anti-nausea properties1, among many other things. I have been fanatical about trying different homemade beauty products lately, so I have been wanting to create a homemade body scrub using a few of my favorite ingredients.
Homemade Body Scrub
-
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, roughly chopped
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup organic sugar cane
- 1/2 cup salt
- 5-10 drops essential oil (optional)
First, roughly chop your ginger. Grab a small saucepan and heat the coconut oil on low and add ginger. Cook for 5-10 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and strain the coconut oil using a sieve or coffee filter. I let it rest a few minutes to fully drain. While the oil is still warm, mix together with olive oil. Stir to combine and let cool to room temperature. Stir in sugar and salt. Add in essential oils, if using.
Pour into a container for future use!
After using this scrub, I was in heaven. The sugar gives it exfoliating properties, which felt incredible when I was massaging it into my legs. Once I rinsed it off, I was left with ridiculously moisturized skin.

Have you made your own Homemade Body Scrub? What are your favorite essential oils to add?
Hi, do you use 1/2 cup pf regular salt used for this.
Which essential oils go best with this recipe?
I really like lavender and peppermint!
Looks nice, will try it this week.
Hi sis..can use virgin coconut oil to replace coconut oil..
What the best
Absolutely! I love virgin coconut oil because it is unrefined and smells better.
I love your blog and most of your recipes. My biggest problem with this one was all the olive oil. The ginger smelled SO good infused in the coconut oil, but the second I added all that olive oil, it completely lost the ginger aroma. All you can smell in this scrub is the olive oil, even though I added essential oils. I’ll look for one without olive oil next time.
Thanks for your comment Shelley! I am sorry the olive oil overwhelmed the other aromas! I think you would be fine to double the coconut oil and leave out the olive oil next time you make it. The consistency will be more solid, but it should work just fine. If you have any jojoba oil, you may add a teaspoon of that for extra moisture.
I appreciate your feedback and hope you have a blessed week 🙂
Hello there,
this recipe sounds like fun! Can I use it on my face?
Hi Simone,
I use sugar scrubs on my face. I am just careful not to scrub hard, because it can be abrasive, and could cause little cuts on the delicate facial skin, if I rub too hard.
Andrea
If stored in a sterilized jar with a good airtight seal, how long would this keep, I was wondering… I would have thought 6 months, (not that it would last that long, but I am wondering…
Thank you, I’d never thought to boil the ginger in the coconut oil, that sounds wicked!! Hence the question…
I’ve also used lemon and or orange peel zest, but have not tried storing it for long periods of time. Do you have an idea on this?
Your opinion would be greatly appreciated…
Hi Lisa,
Since the ginger is removed, I imagine you could get away with storing the scrub for several months. Also, you’re not ingesting anything, so I would just give it a good sniff, and if it doesn’t smell sour, it should probably be fine to use. I have kept some of my scrubs in clean mason jars for several months without any issues.
Lemon and orange peel zest sound wonderful! I will have to try that next time I make a scrub 🙂
so it’s hard for me to get organic cane sugar so is it ok to use regular store bought sugar?
Yes, definitely okay to use regular sugar!
For my homemade body scrub I am looking for plastic jars with tin, or metal lids that are bigger than 8 ounces, similar to the one you have used here. Thank you!
Hi Karen,
The ones in this post I actually bought at Walmart, they’re the Ball brand. I found some similar ones on Amazon (link below) that are 16 oz.
