Last year, I learned how to make lip balm using coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter. It became an instant favorite in my home, and the homes of my friends and family. I have probably made over 500 tubes at this point!
Although I absolutely love my homemade lip balm, sometimes a girl just needs a good homemade lip gloss recipe to put on for ladies night out. This homemade lip gloss recipe is lighter and silkier than homemade lip balm, and it will leave your lips feeling wonderfully soft and smooth.
Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe
Recipe makes 18 containers of homemade lip gloss. (affiliate links added for reference)
- 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles
- 2 tbsp jojoba oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 10 drops essential oils (optional)
- Reusable lip gloss containers
In a small pot, bring 2″ of water to a boil. Meanwhile, add beeswax, jojoba oil, coconut oil and olive oil to a mason jar (or heat-tolerant glass container). Place mason jar into the pot of boiling water, making sure the water doesn’t come higher than the top of the mason jar (you don’t want the water in the lip gloss mixture).
Continue to boil over medium-high until beeswax and oils are melted together, stirring occasionally. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in essential oils.
While still melted, pour your homemade lip gloss into containers and allow to cool before securing with a lid.
Good essential oils to use in this recipe are lemon, grapefruit, orange, eucalyptus, or peppermint. My personal favorite is peppermint.
The ingredients it takes to make 18 Homemade Lip Glosses:
- Beeswax: $.77
- Jojoba oil: $2.60
- Coconut oil: $.99
- Olive Oil: $.07
- Peppermint Essential oil: $.12
- Lip Gloss Containers: $2.37
It is always satisfying to learn how much money I can save making homemade beauty products, so I love to do the math. Factoring in the cost of the containers, you can create 18 jars of homemade lip gloss for a whopping grand total of $6.92.
Which comes out to about $.38 a piece. That sure beats paying $5+ a piece at retail!
Homemade Tinted Lip Gloss
You can also add 1/8 tsp beet root powder to color the lip gloss — which creates a pink, beautiful shine. Just add the beet root powder at the same time as the essential oils.
