Last year, I learned how to make lip balm using coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter. It became an instant favorite in my home, and the homes of my friends and family. I have probably made over 500 tubes at this point!
Although I absolutely love my homemade lip balm, sometimes a girl just needs a good homemade lip gloss recipe to put on for ladies night out. This homemade lip gloss recipe is lighter and silkier than homemade lip balm, and it will leave your lips feeling wonderfully soft and smooth.

Homemade Lip Gloss Recipe
Recipe makes 18 containers of homemade lip gloss. (affiliate links added for reference)
Items Needed:
- 2 tbsp beeswax pastilles
- 2 tbsp jojoba oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 10 drops essential oils (optional)
- Reusable lip gloss containers
In a small pot, bring 2″ of water to a boil. Meanwhile, add beeswax, jojoba oil, coconut oil and olive oil to a mason jar (or heat-tolerant glass container). Place mason jar into the pot of boiling water, making sure the water doesn’t come higher than the top of the mason jar (you don’t want the water in the lip gloss mixture).
Continue to boil over medium-high until beeswax and oils are melted together, stirring occasionally. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in essential oils.
While still melted, pour your homemade lip gloss into containers and allow to cool before securing with a lid.
Good essential oils to use in this recipe are lemon, grapefruit, orange, eucalyptus, or peppermint. My personal favorite is peppermint.
The ingredients it takes to make 18 Homemade Lip Glosses:
- Beeswax: $.77
- Jojoba oil: $2.60
- Coconut oil: $.99
- Olive Oil: $.07
- Peppermint Essential oil: $.12
- Lip Gloss Containers: $2.37
It is always satisfying to learn how much money I can save making homemade beauty products, so I love to do the math. Factoring in the cost of the containers, you can create 18 jars of homemade lip gloss for a whopping grand total of $6.92.
Which comes out to about $.38 a piece. That sure beats paying $5+ a piece at retail!
Homemade Tinted Lip Gloss
You can also add 1/8 tsp beet root powder to color the lip gloss — which creates a pink, beautiful shine. Just add the beet root powder at the same time as the essential oils.

Hey! So is this more of a chapstick/lip balm recipe or a gloss which can be put over lipstick? I really want to start making and selling things but before I buy all the ingredients i just wanna make sure what the outcome would be.
It’s more of a chapstick/lip balm.
how long that can be expired?
The oil to wax ratio can be adjusted to make the lip balm tube friendly. It can be reheated and more oil added until the softness is right. Too soft more wax.
Is it possible to subtitute almond oil or some other oil for the coconut oil i have a family member who is allergic to it.
Hi Telina,
It should be fine to substitute almond oil for coconut oil on a 1:1 substitution. Let me know how it turns out!
I love to use homemade beauty recipes in my daily routine. It would be easy to create this lip gloss. I can’t wait to try this. Thanks for sharing.
Hi and if we want different colours what can we add to it?
Hi Kayla,
I would use mica powder.
The beet root makes it red right? Do you have a suggestion of how to make ones that are pink or coral or even glittery? (I am thinking of little girls who like a little glitter)
Cosmetic grade glitter and mica powders. Just make sure the products are Cosmetic grade.
I want to put this in actual lip gloss tubes not pots. How do you keep this from getting too solid but still soft like for actual lip gloss tubes?
Hi Krys,
I am not sure it would work in a lip gloss tube – I think this recipe is too solid. You may check out this page (http://naturallyhandcrafted.com/body-care-product-recipes/easy-homemade-lip-gloss-recipe/) to see if this is closer to what you’re looking for. Good luck 🙂

I go through a lot of lip gloss, so this sounds awesome. I’ll have to try it.
This looks really great! I need to order some jajoba oil so I can start making things like this again.
Oh man now I have to order jojoba oil! I love homemade lotions, soaps, and lip balm.
This looks really nice and smooth! I can’t use regular chapstick because most contains sunflower oil which I’m allergic too so I might have to try this!
