Shea Butter Body Scrub
Oh, the ways I love shea butter. It has become one of my absolute favorite go-to ingredients for my homemade beauty products. Shea butter offers such indulgent, rich moisture to homemade beauty recipes. I love cocoa butter just as much, but the smell can be overwhelming, and doesn’t always pair as nicely with essential oils, so I generally prefer shea butter.
I am also a huge fan of homemade body scrubs, which can offer deep exfoliating and moisturizing properties to rejuvenate and refresh the skin. While I generally have created my body scrubs from coconut or olive oil, I thought the pairing with shea butter would be a match made in heaven… and I was right! Here is what may be my favorite recipe for homemade body scrub. I think you’re going to love it.
Shea Butter Body Scrub
- 1/2 cup raw shea butter
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1/8 tsp vitamin e oil
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 10 drops essential oils of your choice (optional)*
Place shea butter in a large bowl and beat until creamy, about 5 minutes. Gradually add the olive oil and vitamin e, until fully incorporated. Stir in sugar and essential oils. Transfer to mason jar and cover with a lid.
To use, gently massage into skin, using circular motions. Rinse off with warm water for gloriously moisturized and exfoliated skin.
I dare you to try to find a commercial product that is as hydrating and moisturizing as this recipe. After each use, my skin feels radiant, healthy and it has a natural beautiful glow. I feel like I’ve just left from a spa day! And for under $3 worth of material, and 5 minutes of my time, there’s nothing that can top it 🙂

Anyone worried about wasting the shea butter, I used a pestle and mortar to mix the shea butter & wet ingredients and then added the sugar, with a wooden spoon. Worked like a charm and no waste!
Diane says
I love shea butter and made a homemade lotion with it. I love the lotion but making it, particularly beating the butter, was very messy and seemed like I wasted a lot of the butter. Any alternatives to beating the shea butter? I really want to make this body scrub but want to avoid using the beaters. How about melting it like coconut oil is melted for recipes like these?
Andrea says
Hi Diane. You could certainly try melting it to make it easier to work with as an alternative to beating it. I would just let it cool a bit before adding sugar or salt, otherwise it would melt and make it a rather ineffective scrub. Hope that helps

I have been using this recipe with the addition of some tea tree oil as a daily facial scrub for a few years. I have older skin and I think it does what the oil scrub does with some mild exfoliation.
Andrea says
I love tea tree oils in my facial scrubs. Thanks for sharing, Sara!

This is more or less the recipe I use for my Rose Scrub, but I add some sweet almond oil and castor oil as well as olive oil, and I use finely ground dead sea salt instead of sugar. It is amazing.

I made this and it was terribly greasy. So greasy that it made the bottom of my tub unsafe. Is there a way to make this less greasy
Andrea says
Hi Cindy,
Thank you for your feedback! I have found that is common with natural oils and butters, and takes some getting used to. If you would like it to be less oily, I would recommend decreasing the amount of olive oil in the recipe.
Blessings,
Andrea
