Looking for easy, inexpensive homemade face scrubs? Below are 13 simple exfoliating face scrubs that your skin will love!

I have been using the Oil Cleansing Method to wash my face for almost a year now! My face feels moisturized, healthy and I am having fewer breakouts. For my skin, this organic and homemade face wash works great for me.
About once a week though, my skin needs a simple exfoliating face scrubs. Exfoliating helps remove the dead skin cells and other remaining impurities. It also helps keep my complexion clear and my skin looking healthy.
The beauty industry has a million products that will exfoliate your skin. Products that contain plastics, irritating fragrances, glycerin, parabens, phthalates and other questionable ingredients. These commercial products might cause damage to the delicate facial skin.
The good news is that you can make your own simple exfoliating face scrubs at home, really easily! They’re inexpensive and good for your skin. If your skin has needed a pick-me-up, check out the simple exfoliating face scrubs below:
Simple Sugar Face Scrub

- 1 tsp organic cane sugar (or granulated sugar)
- 2 drops of water
- 1 – 2 drops orange, lemon, lavender or tea tree essential oil (optional)
How you do it:
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Using the tips of your fingers, gently rub scrub into clean face. Take care to avoid the eyes. Remove by rinsing with cool water, and pat dry with a clean towel. Add on a layer of oil as a moisturizer, if necessary.
2 Ingredient Sugar DIY Face Scrub

- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp sugar
How you do it:
Combine coconut oil and sugar in a small bowl, and stir to combine. Rub sugar face scrub into clean facial or neck skin, using gentle circular motions, for 60 seconds. Rinse dry with warm water.
This is an easy recipe to whip up when you don’t have a lot of time. You can increase the ratios to make more of the mix, and store for up to 3 months. If you live in a hotter climate, you may want to store this mixture in the fridge, as coconut oil has a relatively low melting point.
Chocolate Sugar Homemade Face Scrub

- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/8 cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
How you do it:
Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Lather generously onto clean face, rubbing gently into the skin for 60 seconds. Allow to set on skin for 10 minutes, if desired, then rinse clean with warm water.
Blueberry and Honey Exfoliating Face Scrub

- 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
- 2 tbsp honey (raw and local is best)
- 1 – 2 tbsp sugar
How you do it:
Combine all ingredients in a small food processor, and blend until smooth. Add a generous layer to clean face, and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse clean with warm water.
Lemon and Sugar Face Scrub

- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp organic honey
- juice from 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
How you do it:
Whisk together olive oil, honey, and lemon juice in a small bowl, until combined. Stir in sugar until fully combined. Gently rub into facial skin in circular motions, for about one minute. Rinse off skin with warm water.
Find the instructions on how to turn this into a body scrub here.
Honey and Oatmeal Facial Scrub
- 1/2 cup of uncooked oats
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 15 drops lavender essential oil
- 15 drops tea tree essential oil
- 1 tsp dried lavender (optional)
How you do it:
Run oatmeal through the blender to break it up a bit. You don’t want it be too powdery, just break it up a tiny bit. Transfer oatmeal to a small bowl, then add remaining ingredients and stir to combine. To use, gently rub into facial skin with circular motions. Leave on the skin for 5 – 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
I love this scrub because the Honey, Oatmeal, Nutmeg, Lavender and tea tree essential oils may help to reduce breakouts, even skin tone, and moisturize. Find step-by-step instructions and pictures here.
Facial Scrub for Dry Skin

- 1/8 cup honey

Oats, honey and olive oil make this a little different spin from the honey and oatmeal facial scrub. But it’s incredibly simple and great for skin that is aching for moisture. Here is my recipe here.

Thank you <3
Hello! So glad you love the recipes!
Yes, I do apply a moisturizer after using many homemade face scrubs. My favorite is Heritage Stone Rosewater & Glycerin (https://amzn.to/3a2BSFI)
All of these masks are so amazing. Olive oil and oats are so moisturizing but i also make a scrub with albolene, brown sugar and turmeric. A bit of a weird mix but it works wonders for me.
The sugar face scrub is always my favorite because its the simplest and easiest to prepare and second is the blueberry and honey loved the combination it brightens skin thanks for your amazing ideas.
Plz guide me for two tone skin remove naturally
Sea moss gel with sour cream or yogurt.
“Chocolate Sugar Homemade Face Scrub”. I like this way, it suits my skin very well
I find baking soda to be the best homemade scrub for the face, though it can be a bit too abrasive on the skin sometimes. But for those days when skin is dry and flaky, it’s perfect with a little help from a gentle cleanser.
If you don’t want abrasives, you can also try honey for your face as directed here.
Love the ideas!
Good information. Lucky me I recently found your website by chance (stumbleupon).
I’ve book-marked it for later!
Hi, thank you for this useful information! Do you have a good DIY facial scrub combination for sensitive skin that has blemishes/problem skin? I have blemishes as well as an uneven skin tone. I have been looking for a good DIY facial scrub that will target this but unsure what to use. Thanks!
Can’t wait to whip a couple of these up with my daughters when they’re home for the holidays. It will be a fun way to spend time together and pamper ourselves.
You just answered the question of what I’m going to make as Christmas gifts this year! Can’t wait to get started.
Hi everyone!!
among all those scrubs, which one is work perfect on your skin..
Don’t know yet, so excited to give a homemade scrub a try.
This is perfect, I’m hosting a DIY Spa Girls Night at my house tomorrow night and we’ll have to try a couple of these! Thanks
pls can I mix granulated sugar, oatmeal and lavender oil for face scrub?
Hi Andrea, can I use honey, sugar and orange and not use lemon? I just want to lighten up a bit
I have very oily skin, so which combination would work for me?
How often should you do the sugar scrub on your face ?
Hi Michelle,
I wouldn’t do it more than once per week.
Every time you shower. Doctors suggestion showering every other day or two or you dry your natural oils out. If you stink, obviously shower more.
I will start my natural skincare routine from today itself. I am really very excited to start it. I will tell about my progress.
So, I’m not super big on all the sugar in these, because I know it’s better than eating it, but I was wondering if we could use other granules? I’ve heard of using nut shells, but I don’t think I could grind them well enough. Do you have any suggestions like ground pine needles, baked sand, or or something like that?
the advantage of using sugars is that it is soluble in water so will not block your drain pipes. Things like sand, pine needles, nut shells are insoluble in water and will clog your drain pipes.
Just a consideration.
Salt
Can i make a facial scrub containing honey cucumber oats granulated sugar, coconut oil olive oil and Shea butter. Will that harm me?
I can’t imagine any of those ingredients would harm you – I imagine you would have to melt the shea butter to get it to mix with the oats and sugar.
Can I refrigerate this too use it again ?
Hi Arissa – I think many of these will keep in the fridge for about a week. Is there one in particular you had in mind?
For how long am I supposed to scrub ? Loveeeed your scrubs ♥️♥️
Hi Manvi,
So glad you’re enjoying the scrubs!! I usually will gently rub the scrub in circles for a minute, before rinsing.
Hello! I was wondering how long do these usually last? Should they be refrigerated? Can I make them in bulk and store to use when needed? Love them! I want to make them all and use them on my “girls night in” party in a few weeks and would like to get them done soon, I have some free time coming up. Also, so they dry out?
Thank you
Hi NIcole – I think all of these should last up to a week in the fridge – except the blueberry and honey scrub, which would probably only last a day at most. They shouldn’t dry out as long as you have them covered (mason jars would probably be a good way to store them!). A girls night in party sounds super fun!
Hi Andrea I made a face scrub with a mix of honey lemon sugar, and its been out of the refrigerator for months but the sugar is no longer in granules its melted to a liquid form! Is it still healthy to use?
Hello! I probably would toss it. Several months is a bit long for a scrub that hasn’t been refrigerated, and if the sugar granules have dissolved, you lose the exfoliating properties of the scrub.
Absolutely love! Always on the look out for homemade skincare recipes. This leaves me busy for a while! Thank you 🙂 X
so nice i will give it a try
I love the Blueberry and Honey mask. I did it with my daughter. My skin feels fantastic and it was soooo fun!
Made the chocolate sugar face scrub and it is fantastic. My skin feels amazing. I will be recommending this to others.
Thanks
Thank you! Very helpful
I loved the chocolate scrub, made my face so smooth!
Do these scrubs spoil easily because I like to have them in my fridge for a while due to the fact that I double the ingredients being too busy to make it often
You can add a preservative, scrubs come I’m contact with water so you’ll have to add preservatives to prevent bacterias from growing on them so they can stay longer .
If you were to add a preservative to these, about how long would they last at most? Also, do you recommend any preservatives that you’ve used personally with good results? Preferably something as close to “natural” as possible though I’ve read, no preservative is truly natural. I know Vitamin E is a good preservative that will keep it a little longer but I’m not sure if it’ll be long enough.
Which one of these works the best?
For body scrubs I use the regular granulated sugar, but for my face and lips, I use fine sugar, much smaller and gentler granules so I can use the scrubs daily if I want (and the recipes you provided are so delightful, I do enjoy them daily)~Also, just another note, these make wonderful hostess gifts or just no reason gifts for girlfriends. I brought a few of the scrubs into work the first time I made them, to experiment, and gave out tiny containers with each of the scrubs to my pottery students. I keep getting positive feedback on how heavenly the scrubs are~! So easy, so quick, so cheap. Thanks so much for posting 🙂
For coconut-sugar scrub shall I have to grind the sugar in small particles?
How long can I store the lemon sugar scrub?
I think if you stored it in the refrigerator, it should last around 2 weeks.
I applied himalaya face wash and it made my face oily and pimples and black spots and large pores coming and black heads it made my life nightmare what should I do
for the simple sugar face scrub, do we really need to use orange, lemon, lavender or melaleuca essential oil all together? or should we just pick one out of those 4?
Hello – you can do either! You can certainly only use one essential oil, or you can combine 2, 3, or 4 together. If you use multiple oils, just make sure to only use the number of drops in the recipe and divide by the number of essential oils you’re using.
I use the 2-ingredient face scrub once a week. I always have sugar and coconut oil on hand and this simple scrub works so well!
I’ve been wanting to make a homemade face scrub with my daughter. Now I can make 13 of them! Thanks for the great ideas, she’ll be thrilled to be able to make our own face scrubs.
Are you able to store these face scrubs in a jar for a period of time? If so for how long? Love these ideas but i travel a lot so would like to bring them with me! 🙂
I assume you could with the honey and oatmeal face scrub but only for maybe a week. No longer ?
What some good as a lip scrub my lips are dry and flakey.
Hi Wendy – this is my favorite recipe! https://homemadeforelle.com/diy-brown-sugar-lip-scrub/
Hi, I actually know a great tip for that. You can use sugar and water to rejuvenate your lips. First, dampen the affected area with water, then dip your finger into a small cup of sugar. Apply the sugar onto your lips and “scrub” off the dead skin or flakiness you’re experiencing. You can also brush it off using your toothbrush the next time you brush your teeth, just not too rough of course. Hope this helps! Good luck 🙂
I want to make the sugar scrub for baby shower gifts, in pink, it’s a girl. Is this not a good idea? How long would they be good for? Can I color it pink with regular food coloring?
Hi Bonnie –
I think this is a great idea! You can certainly make a basic facial sugar scrub (you could even do a body scrub -https://homemadeforelle.com/homemade-sugar-scrub-recipe/). I wouldn’t recommend coloring a facial scrub, but it would be fine to color a body scrub. If you want it to turn out pink, I would recommend using beet root powder (http://amzn.to/2FQkQfv), since it is naturally sourced, but yes – you could also use a drop or two of food coloring, as well.
Hope that helps!
The coconut and sugar one lasts a few months if kept in a cool environment
Thank you to the person who made this post. These homemade facial scrubs ideas are so helpful simply because most of these ingredients are already have in our home.
Can’t wait to try the lemon one and the blueberry one.
