Want to learn how to make a hot chocolate recipe? Here is a simple recipe for homemade hot cocoa mix that only takes 30 seconds to prepare!
When I was growing up, I always made hot chocolate from a white packet, which I dumped into a mug of hot water, and mixed well with a spoon.
Now that I am a parent, who reads labels on processed foods, I have learned to make my own hot chocolate recipe.
Why did I make the switch? Well, for starters, the ingredients on one of the most popular hot chocolate pre-made mixes was pretty startling:
- Corn Syrup Solids
- Dairy Product Solids
- Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
- Artificial Flavor
- Cellulose Gum
- Sodium Caseinate
- Dipotassium Phosphate
- Sodium Aluminosilicate
- Mono and Diglycerides
- Guar Gum
Here is what is in my homemade hot chocolate mix:
- Unsweetened Cocoa
- Organic sugar cane (or regular sugar)
- Cinnamon (optional)
- A Pinch of Salt
Sounds much more appetizing, doesn’t it?

The best part is that my children actually prefer the taste of this homemade hot chocolate. It’s also cheaper than buying pre-made mixes, and it only takes about 30 seconds to make!
You can even make in in larger batches, so you only have to do it once. Whenever you’re ready for a cup of hot cocoa, just grab the mix, add it to some warm water or milk, and done!
