A month ago, it was one of the first cool days of the fall, and I was craving hot chocolate.  My homemade hot chocolate is pretty amazing, but I happened to be working at the time, and decided to go visit a local coffee shop.  I’m a New Mexican native, and am always looking for local favorites. I scanned the menu and my eyes naturally gravitated to the Mexican hot chocolate.  It featured whole milk mixed with Mexican chocolate and notes of cinnamon, and my choice became easy.  I HAD to try their Mexican hot chocolate!

All I can say is YUM!!

If there is such a thing as an adult hot chocolate, this is it, my friends.  It had the rich creaminess of a whole milk hot chocolate, with brilliant notes of spiciness from the Mexican chocolate and warmth from the cinnamon.

I am one of those people who loves to recreate my favorite dishes and drinks at home.  For the last month, I have been thinking of how to recreate Mexican hot chocolate at home.  I didn’t want to simply shake some chile and powdered cocoa into milk… I wanted to really create a perfect homemade Mexican hot chocolate.

I’m happy to say, I finally mastered the recipe for homemade Mexican hot chocolate!  My family and I went on a day trip to Santa Fe, and we visited a local shop.  They had a great selection of local favorites, including Chocolate Mexicano.

I have seen Chocolate Mexicano before, and knew it would be perfect for homemade Mexican hot chocolate. It is made from organic cacao beans, organic sugar cane and organic chili powder.  This chocolate packs a bold flavor that, when melted down, makes a decadent, creamy hot chocolate.

It wasn’t even an hour after I got home that I unwrapped my Mexican chocolate, added it to a pot with some whole milk, and started creating my homemade Mexican hot chocolate.

It usually takes several attempts at a recipe before I am sure that it is perfect, but this time I got it right on the first try.  I give most of the credit to the chocolate, but am nevertheless thrilled with how it turned out.  Just like my local coffee shop — this homemade Mexican hot chocolate is creamy with a delicious balance of chocolate and cinnamon, with just a hint of spice.

It’s perfect. This recipe… it’s a keeper.

This recipe reminds me of living in New Mexico and Texas. I will have to head out to one of the local stores here in VA and see if I can find the chocolate. Yum
